04 DOSIER:

Steve Thorn, Program Coordinator- Fort Bragg | Pinehurst

Name:  Steven Thorn

Where were you born and raised?
I was born in Muncie, Indiana but was raised in Dayton, Ohio

What’s a short story around the biggest transition you’ve faced in life?
Transitioning out of the Army after serving for 20 years was hard. I found myself obsessing over the big picture and wanting the world. Great job, big money, and world changing purpose. Attending THF allowed me to realize what I really valued and needed. My family and my happiness are the most important things in my life. If I put those two things first I can never fail.

What’s the one piece of advice you’d give a younger you?
Protect your bandwidth. Our brains only have so much room available. If you fill it with things that don’t align with your purpose you’re wasting valuable bandwidth.

Your Personal Why?
To be the steady hands that calm a chaotic sea.

How does your Why drive you to be a part of the THF Ecosystem?
Transitioning out of the military in a lot of ways is the most chaotic thing a service member does in their entire career. Interestingly enough it’s also the thing service members are the least trained or prepared for. I want to be a calming voice to service members on chaotic seas. The waters are rough but if we stay the course and trust the process we’ll find smooth waters on the other side of the chaos.

Military Connection or Why do you respect Special Operators?
I served 20 years in the Army. The last 10 I spent in an SMU supporting Special Operators. I respect them because I’ve seen their sacrifice and dedication first hand. I’ve seen them give everything to support this country and the world. I want to continue to support them post Army career because they deserve it.

Favorite THF Value, and why?
“Be You”. The military doesn’t often allow members to truly be themselves. What makes you happy is a question I was never asked during my service. I find that’s the most important question to ask yourself during transition. Be who you are, be unashamed, be happy! In turn you’ll be successful and find your purpose outside of your old uniform.
