Name: Will Dewilde
Where were you born and raised?
I was born in Colorado Springs Colorado inside a Air Force family that was stationed around the United States. Raised in Colorado, New York, Washington D.C., Virginia and Alabama.
What’s a short story around the biggest transition you’ve faced in life?
One of the most difficult transitions in my Naval career was the same transition many people in Naval Special Warfare and Special Operations struggle with, some make it, others never do. This is the transition from frontline operator to positions of leadership and service to those around you. Many young service members join out of a sense of duty with a thirst for adventure. With time adventure turns to a profession. Once a professional in your field there is a thirst to master your craft, a quest for artistry in your specialties. As you pursue the artistry you move into ranked positions of leadership, these positions are not about adventure and you anymore, the profession becomes a calling. This calling is about taking care of those around you and getting the mission accomplished. This step and transition is perhaps the most difficult for the professional operator to make as it requires you to elevate yourself from the crowd, sometimes remove yourself from the action and lead to serve others. Difficult and sometimes deadly decisions are made that affect others, one must live with them either way. What I have learned through the years in this difficult process to elevate to a calling is all about servant leadership to others and it is far more important and just as satisfying as any other positions I have ever held.
